Marina, with Tove Stryke
Paramount Theatre, Seattle, WA
02.07.2021

The moment I walked into the Paramount Theatre on Monday I could instantly tell I was a Marina concert. Young, jubilant, beautiful fans dressed up walked through the historic venue. Many standing in line to buy their new favorite Marina merch.

After the extraordinary Tove Styrke opened up the show, the stage was prepared for Marina. The background had 30 foot tall drapes in the background with Marina’s band at the base. The rest of the stage was completely open. The entire venue was dark except for lights on the background drapes as the band walked out silhouetted against the backdrop. Marina was the last to walk out as the cheers soared even higher.

The set opened with “Ancient Dreams in Modern Land” and “Venus Fly Trap. The same opening songs from Marina’s newest album, “Ancient Dreams in Modern Land”. The news had strong vibes of modern pop-rock meets 80’s pop. Something totally different then previous albums while still staying true to past albums.

Marina dressed in a black sheer dress with a deep leg slit down both sides. She looked elegant the entire concert as her hair blew in the air from the stage wind. Giving her a goddess look. She frequently waved and spoke the to fans in the balcony above, making sure everyone felt seen. You’d think she’d charmed you to the max and then she speaks and her wonderful accent throws you over the fence.

There was never a dull moment in the night. From the opening songs to the final song of the set. The show had the feel of a rock concert but the spirit or a pop concert merged together. Quieter songs like “Highly Emotional People” would be followed up with fast beat songs like “How to Be A Heartbreaker”. The colors of stage lights matching the mood of each song ranging from vibrant orange, red, yellow, on the faster songs and purple on the slower ballad songs.

The final song of the night was clearly going to be “Bubblegum Bitch” from Marina’s 2021 “Electra Heart” album. All the fans went nuts releasing the last bit of energy they had left. The entire show I completely forgot it was a Monday night. She literally made it feel like there was nothing else going on in the world except this concert. Listening to music on your phone’s headphones will never be the same as attending a live concert, ever. The lights, the sound, the nearly 3,000 other people dancing next to you makes you feel something you can never replicate.

Marina came out for an encore to play the final track, “Goodbye”. A fitting track to end the show. Even though the song is quiet and slow, opposite what you would expect for the last song, it’s one of the most powerful song of “Ancient Dreams in Modern Land”. Marina’s beautiful voice showed it’s true range and the chorus’s harmonies sounded even more beautiful live than any recording device could capture.

Be sure to catch Marina on her Ancient Dreams in Modern Land Tour.
