My Goodness w/ Smokey Brights and Year of Death

In a city like Seattle, where we’re known for our grunge-rock scene, new bands with that kind of sound can easily get swept under the radar. My Goodness, however, refuse to be ignored. For the release of their sophomore album, Scavengers, they packed fans into The Crocodile for a powerful set of celebration.

After Year of Death opening the night with their echoey electronic sound, Smokey Brights were a great surprise. Going to see smaller local bands can be pretty hit or miss, especially because a low production budget doesn’t usually lead to the most accurate match between studio recordings and live performances, so the shows can be difficult to predict.

Smokey Brights were surely a hit though, mixing a retro kind of background with Black Keys-ish guitar riffs and floaty vocals, their performance was great from start to finish. Between the songs, shout-outs to friends in the crowd, and reminders to fans to stay connected with their families during trying times politically, Smokey Brights certainly were the “warm hug” they were described as by Year of Death, and perfect to really get the night rolling for My Goodness.

Finally, My Goodness began their set of perfectly cultivated tracks. Opening their performance with “Islands,” the first song of the album that was released as a single earlier last year, the band and crowd quickly began moving and happily singing along.

It can get pretty boring or annoying when nearly every song from a band sounds similar, but My Goodness has found the perfect middle line, where their tracks are similar enough that they fit together and follow a theme, but are still different enough that it doesn’t get boring or repetitive, simply because they do it so well. The energy of the set was high the whole time, with the band passionately playing the tracks with big smiles and laughs to contrast the darker sounds and heavy guitar riffs.

An amazing performance to celebrate and incredible album, the release of Scavengers gave My Goodness another set of powerful tracks easy to rock out to, and perfect for a show anytime and any place you’re able to catch them.
