Journey w/ Doobie Brothers
White River Amphitheatre, Seattle, WA
08.23.16
On a beautiful summer evening, Auburn’s White River Amphitheatre was pretty packed, even the usually-standing general admission area at the front of the stage was assigned seating, but after all, it was an older generation there to enjoy a double bill of classic Bay Area bands
A giant Golden Gate bridge backdrop set the stage for The Doobie Brothers, an 8-piece band with two drummers and three guitarists/singers on stage. They have been performing since 1969 and have made so many hit songs in their nearly five decades making music. Listening to hit after hit with classics like “Taking It To The Streets,” “Black Water,” and “China Grove” had the entire crowd on their feet.
The lights dimmed and slowly faded into a blue haze as Journey hit the stage Opening with favorite “Separate Ways,” they really came out of the gate on fire. Arnel Pineda has so much energy and rarely stands still. They should call him Air-nel as he leaped and jumped all over the place, belting out the songs that we have all come to know from the band’s extensive catalogue of music.
Journey 2016 is as close to a classic line up as we are going to get with the return of Steve Smith behind the kit. Band leader/guitarist Neal Schon has been the mainstay of the band since their formation in 1973, rounded out by longtime bassist Ross Valory and keyboardist/guitarist Jonathan Cain.
Live they always deliver, and with Pineda joining the band in 2007 they have been touring pretty regularly, his vocal style closely matching the voice of original singer Steve Perry. This was no exception as they played a set of older songs that have defined a career as one of America’s most beloved and iconic musical acts, their fans just “Don’t stop Believing” in the power of music!
