Fitz & the Tantrums w/ Pickwick and Phases
Marymoor Park, Redmond, WA
08.20.16

Summer may have been a long time coming to the Northwest, but it was in full force on the day Fitz and the Tantrums came to town. As show time rounded the bend, temps finally cooled down for what would be a perfect evening at Marymoor Park, starting with two great opening acts.

First up was indie pop band Phases from Los Angeles. Supporting latest EP Afterparty, front woman Z Berg and her infectious personality had those in attendance up on their feet! While the other members were more subdued by comparison, they delivered a fun set with all of them harmonizing as the evening was getting started.

Next up were Seattle’s own Pickwick. Their immediate, surprising sound is a combination of indie rock and R&B, vocalist Galen Disston’s soulful voice a welcome surprise. Guitarist Michael Parker sat down and announced to the crowd that he had broken both his ankles the week prior to the show. He later asked if there were any pharmaceutical reps that needed someone for Oxycodone testing. Then asked seriously the cost of a wheelchair. The pain of not being able to walk at all and having to play a gig sounded unbearable. The band sounded fantastic though and if you have never heard them you have to check them out.

The floor filled up during Pickwick and just as indie pop darlings Fitz and the Tantrums were about to hit the stage, everyone was ready for a party.

The Los Angeles band took to the stage with a burst of energy. Front man Michael Fitzpatrick and vocalist Noelle Scaggs were so great to watch. Also up front was saxophone/guitarist/keyboardist James King. Behind them the neon looking stage lights lit up bassist Joseph Karnes, keyboardist Jeremy Ruzumna, and drummer John Wicks cycling through the mesmerizing rectangular pattern.

The band made sure to recognize that they were in Redmond/Seattle area and thanked everyone for coming out to see them, reminiscing about their humble beginnings playing The Crocodile several tours ago. All in attendance were up and dancing as the band supported their 2016 self-titled album.

Great, rhythm-heavy pop songs like “Out Of My League,” “Roll Up,” and crowd fave “Handclap” had everyone enjoying the long-awaited summer evening while enjoying a visually mesmerizing light show.
