Little Hurricane w/ Rin Tin Tiger

In a most appropriate setting, San Diego-based jam blues duo Little Hurricane inhabited the Tractor Tavern on Tuesday night, kicking up their heels for an enjoyable, laidback evening of hip twang. A tinge of Chicago roots and borne of a Craigslist ad, singer-guitarist Anthony Catalano and singer-drummer Celeste Spina together make up the wonderful, musical whirlwind that is Little Hurricane. Five years in, this duo has produced two albums, as well as an album of covers. Talk of a third original title being released shortly has the fanbase abuzz.
Little Hurricane’s varied repertoire was on display at the Tractor Tavern, together with Spina’s cowboy boots, which sat beside her drum kit as she played the entire set barefoot. A keyboard, a slide guitar, and a ukulele were amongst other things that also filled the stage, as the duo spun their craft around a fun array of instruments. And, while there’s always an element of playtime, do not hesitate to bet that Little Hurricane jammed. Weaving through upbeat tempos, they also threw in a cover of Moby’s “Natural Blues,” and they were rocking so hard that the drum pedal broke before their last encore song. Debating on whether or not to continue, they came to a decisive “fuck it” and burned through.
Eclectic San Fran-based Rin Tin Tiger opened the night with their unique indie, folk rock sound. All the hip southern kids can dig this. Up-tempo yet harmonic, this trio brings a new album and a lot of energy. Neither beards nor interesting hat choices could get in the way of taking at least one good leap off of the drum kit before calling curtain. With a few dates remaining, their tour with Little Hurricane wraps up in Napa on September 27th, so be sure to check these folks out.
