Seattle Music News had a quick chat with the Mowglis’ Colin Dieden while they are on the Real Good Life tour. Read more about life on the road and what essentials to have on tour.

SMN: What’s the pre-show ritual?
CD: My pre-show ritual usually includes a nap- but these days we’ve gotten really into Mario Kart for Nintendo Switch so we sit around on the bus and play a lot of that. Then, when it’s show time, we put our hands in the center and shout some random, esoteric word before getting out there.

SMN: What’s the craziest fan story or funniest tour story?
DC: So many that I’d love to tell but can’t. One time we completely duct taped Andy inside his bunk so he wasn’t able to get out in the morning. That was pretty funny.

SMN: What are some of the tour bus essentials?
DC: Noise cancelling headphones & Flamin’ hot Cheetos.

SMN: What’s your favorite song to play live and why?
DC: Right now I think it’s our newest song Kansas City. It just really has a very emotional aspect to it that I think everyone in the room feels.

SMN: What’s your favorite city to perform in and why?
DC: For me it’s Kansas City because it’s my hometown and I love the relationship the city has with The Mowgli’s.

SMN: How has this tour been different from previous ones?
DC: We’re doing more intimate shows this tour, letting the fans get closer to have a more immersive experience.

SMN: What was it like touring with the Maine and Beach Weather last year?
DC: It was tight! The Maine guys are great.

SMN: Which artists/bands are some of the strongest musical influences? Does it change significantly album to album?
DC: I think everyone has a different answer to that. I’m a songwriter, all day. That’s what I do and that’s how I think- so for me to be good at what I do, I have to listen to everything and know what’s happening in every aspect of music. It’s like how a doctor needs to know about the progression of modern medicine except I’m not a doctor because I’d suck at that.

SMN: If you weren’t in a band, what would you be doing instead?
DC: I’d really like to be a chef.

SMN: If you were stuck on a desert island, what’s one movie, one music album, and one book you would hope to have on you?
DC: Movie: Goodfellas, Album: Crosby Stills Nash & Young Deja Vu, Book: Dharma Bums by Kerouac
