Sasquatch Launch Party 2016
with Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaires, DJ Sassyblack & M. Ward
Neptune Theatre, Seattle, WA
01.11.16

Every year, the folks behind Sasquatch! Music Festival pull together a lineup announcement slash launch party to get us all atwitter with excitement over the Memorial Day weekend affair that has been known as both a showcase and a launch pad for “indie” artists of all genres. This year’s show was no exception to the excitement. DJ Sassyblack – one half of local hip hop group Thee Satisfaction – put her outstanding skills to work warming up the crowd, which took a ridiculously long time to fill in. Wasn’t there a line to get in last year? Frankly, I could have just listened to her spin for the rest of the night and been perfectly content.

But to noavail. We were then treated to surprise opener M. Ward – who if you follow on social media spoiled the surprise about eight hours ago – but nonetheless, his set swung from sweet folksy ballads to rip-roaring alt rock. Once he took off his parka and got comfy on stage, his fiercely precise yet frantic guitar work and gruff voice were a welcome treat. He’s got a new album coming out in March, and yes, he and this new band will be filling one of those precious Sasquatch! Festival slots.

After the break came the real action. Revivalist soul singer Charles Bradley may be one of the most endearing performers I’ve ever seen. When I say he’s 67 years young, it’s for real. The guy’s got moves, likely resulting from years of James Brown impersonations and the Brooklyn club scene. With two albums under his funky spangled belt – and another set for April release – in just the last five years, it’s clear Bradley has stories to tell.

And man, does he tell them. Backed by “His Extraordinaires,” a seven-piece soul band of young hipsters that epitomize looking sharp, Bradley commands the crowd in his custom bedazzled suits. On “Crying in the Chapel” he makes your heart drop, while “The World (Is Going Up In Flames)” sings like a 60s anthem made more resonant than ever in modern times. At various points Bradley drops it low, does the robot, and spins like a soul machine, only to finish with a swinging mic drop and genuine love for the crowd. Oh, and that “Rebel Rebel” Bowie cover encore? Priceless. Do yourself a favor and get to his show quick.

At the end of the night, the lineup announcement happened. And yes, The Cure will be there. And it might have gotten leaked. And it will be another winning weekend of big names and new discoveries. Check out the full list here and we’ll see you there!
