G-Eazy w/A$AP Ferg, Marc E. Bassy and Nef the Pharaoh
WaMu Theater, Seattle, WA
01.07.16

It’s only the second night of the When It’s Dark Out world tour, and G-Eazy is already on point. Against a backdrop of plywood storefronts and flashing neon, the 26-year-old Loyola University graduate – née Gerald Gillum – puts on a well-rehearsed, near-perfect show in front of a sold out crowd, on the heels of a number one sophomore album. This guys knows what he’s doing. Oft compared to Macklemore or Eminem – cause clearly, he’s white – G-Eazy’s thoughtful, but uncomplicated, lyrics and radio-friendly production have landed him square in the mainstream space.

And he’s taking full advantage. The crowd at WaMu theater is unsurprisingly young, large groups of teens, young groping couples, guys clad in copycats of G-Eazy’s all-black styles. The rapper kicks off the set with the barreling verses of “Random” the first track of the new album, as the crowd erupts with screams. On “Let’s Get Lost” Gillum bravely ventured into the crowd, which had spent most of the night spilling over the front barrier, and during “Drifting” he gave them a little taste of the abs.

Opener Marc E. Bassy joined him on stage for their track “Some Kind of Drug”, and he closed the set with lead single “Me, Myself & I.” The crowd was an impressive sea of synchronized arm waving and jumping and singing along throughout the night. The set list covers most of his hits, including tracks from his independent days and it’s easy to see and hear why he’s riding a wave of popularity. His classic good looks and clean-cut style, paired with easy-to-digest tracks make for the perfect mix.

Even though the crowd was clearly there for G-Eazy, opener A$AP Ferg got them admirably excited as well. His short, fast-spit tracks are a contrast to G-Eazy’s mid-paced, more melodic work, but the crowd seemed into Ferg’s bombastic delivery. He kicked off the set with “Let it Go” – a contrast to the all-to-familiar Frozen track – and instantly had people crowd-surfing. “Hella Hoes” seemed a crowd favorite, and then “Tatted Angel,” his first track from the expected new album brought the house down.
