La Luz w/ Gazebos and Sick Sad World
Neumos, Seattle, WA
12.30.15

Ending the year on a high note, Seattle surf-noir sweethearts La Luz got low for a two-night sold out stint at Neumos. The young band has made some serious strides in just a few short years, with two acclaimed full-lengths out on Hardly Art, including the 2015 Ty Segall-produced Weirdo Shrine, and they’re known for their enthusiastic live shows.

Tonight was no exception, as the foursome packed the house with their easy-listening, but deeply intense, fuzzed-out surf rock. The band danced right along with the crowd the entire set, lead guitarist Shana Cleveland rocking out behind her signature bangs, drummer Marian Li Pino with a smile that lit up the room. The dark undertones of their songs and perfect four-part doo-woop harmonies made the perfect mashup for a baby mosh pit. There was even a limbo competition, part of the band’s signature Soul-Train inspired interactions with their fans.

Since the band just officially announced their impending move to Los Angeles, the crowd enthusiastically soaked up as much of them as possible, getting the local love in before we lose them to warmer climes.

The middle slot of the night was filled by Gazebos, another local heavyweight, self-proclaimed “whoa-pop” band fronted by local tattoo shop owner Shannon Perry. Their free-for-all of manic live energy makes for a very entertaining show. Drummer Jordan T. Adams made the most of a dress and goggles, smiling away the entire set while Perry made sickly beautiful faces dancing and acting out every moment of every song.

Clearly talented, this foursome – flushed out by guitarist TV Coahran and bassist Shane Herrell – makes for a dizzying array. They played their now-standard, but always amazing, cover of “There Are Worse Things I Could Do” from Grease which the crowd loved to sing along to. Their debut album Die Alone is out next month on Hardly Art.
