Falling in Reverse, Atreyu, From Ashes to New, and Assuming We Survive

What better way to spend a Monday night than in a mosh pit? With very little encouragement, that’s exactly what Seattle did during the Showbox stop for Falling in Reverse and Atreyu’s Christmas Vacation Tour, with special guests From Ashes to New and Assuming We Survive. This four band lineup boasted plenty of heavy beats, fast lyricism, and screaming metalcore. All of which inspired constant crowd-surfing.

Opening the show with a bang was SoCal pop-punk band Assuming We Survive. The mic was out, but lead vocalist Adrian Estrella didn’t let that stop him, jumping into the crowd and handing it to a screaming fan before grabbing a new one. “I want to see the biggest circle pit of the whole tour” he shouted, and that’s exactly what happened, and lasted the rest of the show. The band’s energy was fantastic, their crowd interactions non-stop, and their fast-paced enthusiastic musicianship on point.

After a very fast set-change, a peeling of equipment layers on stage, central Pennsylvania rap-rock outfit From Ashes to New took the stage. Co-vocalists Matt Brandyberry and Chris Musser mount metal boxes at the front of the stage like pulpits to lead a flock and proceed to deliver fierce energy for the entire set. The trade off between rap and screaming metal, like a hardcore Linkin Park, had the crowd screaming. Their mixed genre tracks aim to bring a positive light to difficult situations, and they seem pretty passionate in their delivery.

Back from a bit of a hiatus and in support of their latest release Long Live – their first since 2009 – Atreyu takes the stage through a cloud of fog and flashing white strobe lights and the crowd is immediately attentive. Their set list included tracks from each of their albums, with crowd favorites like “Ex’s and Oh’s” and their Bon Jovi cover “You Give Love A Bad Name.” The audience sang along throughout, the popular metalcore band delivering an intense show that felt heartfelt and authoritative.

Then the stage is transformed into a Christmas cityscape as Falling in Reverse takes the stage. The post-hardcore group, led by vocalist Ronnie Radke, got right into action. Radke’s animated personal delivery is clearly the star of this show, though the band is top notch as far as musicianship. Fast-paced lyricism with interesting, jangly production and heavy beats make for a modern metallic pummeling of the senses.
