The mash-up genre of music has always been a bit odd to me. Taking existing songs, incorporating some different beats and stringing them together for one long dance song seemed so strange. No instruments, just some know-how around a beat machine.

However, this is where groups like Big Gigantic come in. With Dominic on saxophone and Jeremy on drums, they add another layer to this genre, along with creating some funky originals. Donning matching Ken Griffey Jr. jerseys and white pants (with Jeremy adding some rad green and blue lit shoes), they emphatically took the stage and engaged the audience from the beginning. I’ll be honest… being on stage with them and witnessing their musical prowess was overwhelming in the best of ways.

With the crowd wearing an abundance of glitter and plenty of furry boots, the guys of Big Gigantic added some flavor to hits such as “Can I Get a What… ” by Jay Z, “Can’t Hold Us” by Macklemore, and “I Need a Dollar” by Big G. My favorite track of the night was one of their originals, “Get On Up”, which was a tour de force of Jeremy’s saxophone skills.

So here is what I learned: Don’t jump to conclusions about music that incorporates a laptop, because you just never know when you’ll miss an invitation to bask in some outstanding funk and fun.
