HAERTS
Neumos, Seattle, WA

On this particular evening at Neumos, the return of KEXP’S John in the Morning at Night was celebrated with an eclectic night of music with Brooklyn’s HAERTS headlining the bill.
Seattle’s DIY electronic-pop duo Navvi, made up of producer Brad Boettiger and vocalist Kristin Henry, opened the show with their brooding beats and sultry melodies.

New York’s Baby Dayliner took the stage next with his laptop in a vintage suitcase. He strutted across the stage in a tailored suit and brought the crowd a fusion of old-fashioned crooning and 80’s pop, which definitely drove the crowd to a dancing frenzy.

Third up on stage was local indie rock favorite Pickwick. Even with a recently broken foot, lead singer Galen Disston brought heaps of energy from his stool, and he led his band through their set of old favorites like “The Round” and “Lady Luck,” and even brought some new tunes to the table. They crossed genres, from American garage rock to R&B, throughout their impassioned performance, and brought the injured Disston to his feet on more than one occasion.

Headliner HAERTS took to the stage at about 11:45pm and treated the crowd to a melodic oasis of synth-pop. Front woman Nini Fabi’s voice has a hint of Stevie Nicks’ rasp and the moodiness of Hope Sandoval, while her band crafts cosmic and expansive synths. Their lyrics evoke an almost confessional quality, especially on tracks like “Giving Up” and “Heart”. They ended their set with a cover of Procol Harum’s “Whiter Shade of Pale,” which was haunting, to say the least.

It was a night of music that spanned genres and styles and showed that the Seattle Movement definitely has room on their train for artists from near and far.
