This is the second go-round for NYC based musician and composer Xander Duell, whose sophomore album was released last year on Swedish art-collective label INGRID. Wade Laiste comes out in the US in July and Duell is touring it around in a stripped-down show that highlights the essence of his sound experiments.

While his debut LP Experimental Tape No. 2, Vol 1 was the epitome of its title, the new album gives us a somewhat buttoned up, more approachable version of the Duell’s art form. His twisted lyrics hook you from one end of the spectrum while his dreamy, shoegaze pop grabs you from another. Combined, the tracks are a vision of outsider creativity. And in person, Duell envelops you in layered sounds and stripped-down performance in a way that is both somewhat discomforting and gentle at the same time.

On stage, it’s just Duell and a drummer. Duell operating keys and a laptop full of electronic bits and beats as well as a guitar. He seems emotional on stage, wrestling with both enjoyment and personal torture. But he ended with the sounds of the ocean, which is always a nice sendoff. It’s a unique draw for those brave enough to dip their toe in the experimental pop water.

Watch for tour dates and tunes here.
